The Association of Professional Naturopaths of Quebec Raises an Eyebrow at the Elimination of the Tax Credit for Natural Healthcare

Terebonne, April 17, 2025 – The Association of Professional Naturopaths of Quebec (ANPQ) expresses its sincere disappointment—and more than a little surprise—at the decision by Finance Minister Éric Girard to eliminate the tax credit for naturopathy, homeopathy, osteopathy, and herbal medicine. A springtime surprise we could have done without, announced in the 2025-2026 provincial budget on March 25.

Starting January 1, 2026, Quebecers will no longer be able to claim these expenses on their provincial tax returns. The government is following in Ottawa’s footsteps, but according to the ANPQ, this marks a step backward—perhaps even a small leap—in terms of access to complementary and preventive care.

"This kind of policy change may look technical on paper, but it has very real impacts on people's lives. It’s often the most vulnerable—those without private insurance—who rely on these services and will now be forced to choose between their budget and their well-being," says the ANPQ. "And once again, we see natural health practices being pushed aside, even though so many Quebecers trust and use them as part of their wellness journey. Something doesn’t add up."

The government justifies the decision by pointing out that these practices are not governed by a professional order. Yet in many other places—including some of our Canadian neighbors—these professions are recognized, regulated, and even embraced. The ANPQ reminds the public that naturopathy is far from a passing trend: it plays an essential role in prevention, well-being, and long-term health guidance.

The Association is calling on the government to reconsider this decision and to work collaboratively with stakeholders in the field. After all, health isn’t just a line item in a budget—it’s a human, holistic experience that should remain accessible and diverse.
